Evaluative Functions of Biblical Phraseological Units

Abstract: This paper examines appraisal instantiations realised through Biblical phraseological units in the Biblical text itself. It reports on some of the findings of a larger study on Biblical phraseological units in English in which appraisal analysis is applied. The database comprises 378 phraseological units extracted from several dictionaries. First, the textual function of the phraseological units is determined. Next, for the ones with evaluative function, the type of evaluation is defined. The function of the studied phraseological units as expressive resources from the semantic regions of emotion, ethics and aesthetics is analysed. Using the comprehensive taxonomy of appraisal lexical resources provided by the appraisal model evaluative inscriptions and tokens of invoked evaluation found in the Biblical text were assigned to the sub-categories of social sanction and social esteem and were further divided into the categories of propriety and veracity and normality, capacity and tenacity respectively. Information concerning the frequency distribution of appraisal instantiations in the Biblical text is presented. Finally, comparisons with the findings of two other studies are drawn. It is argued that in the collectivity to individual continuum Biblical phraseological units have a high potential of performing an evaluative function.

Pedagogical Factors оf English Language Professional Training оf Future Doctors

Abstract: The process of modernization of the higher educational system in Ukraine poses certain requirements to the foreign language (L2) training of future medical specialists at university level. In order to be able to function effectively and efficiently on the job market not only on national, but also on international level, medical students need to possess transversal competences, digital and entrepreneurial skills, as well as mastery in at least one foreign language. With regard to this, the aim of the current article is to present the pedagogical factors and conditions at the heart of interdisciplinary L2 training of the future medical specialists in Ukraine. It provides a theoretical analysis of these two issues and outlines their key role in the L2 teaching and learning process at tertiary level. The article also highlights the main interdisciplinary principles underlying the foreign language preparation of future doctors in the Odessa National Medical University.The shared insights could serve as a trigger to the updating of all foreign language training programmes of English for specific purposes implemented on a national level in Ukrainian higher education institutions.

Verbalized Social Statuses of a Person in the Linguocultural Space “Crime” of Modern Germany

Abstract: Although the interdisciplinary approach towards linguistic phenomena appears to be a mainstream methodological assumption of present-day linguistics, we can hardly witness breakthrough discoveries concerning fundamental issues of life, social life and humans’ verbal behaviour. The article attempts to investigate language signs for denoting the social status of a person in the linguistic and cultural space “crime” of modern Germany. The social status of a person is an important component of a person’s daily life. The nomination units of social status are presented at different levels of the language: lexical, phrase or extra-phrasal levels. By adequately assessing the status of the addressee, the speaker can choose the right strategies and tactics and achieve the goal. The study of the functioning of units of this type and the establishment of patterns of coding information on a person’s social status in a particular linguistic culture will make it possible to identify the characteristic features of a specific nation.
